We'll get to the Crab People in a minute, I promise, but first I'd like to address a misconception about the percentage of the American electorate that I fall into. That is, white people who voted for Barack Obama in 2008. The notion that we (or at least I) voted for President Obama because he's black and it would make us feel good is insulting.
I would have voted for Barack Obama if he were pink with yellow polka dots and had laser guided tentacles protruding from his chest. Even if he weren't a carbon based life form, okay? Think South Park, "Crab People... Crab People". John Mc Cain had way too many negatives (the greatest of which is named Sarah Palin), and the Bush/Cheney disaster simply had to be steered away from at all cost. As in, "All hands on deck, brace for impact, hard left!"
The media on both sides seemed to accept and perpetuate this myth. Either there was insufficient polling, or they just didn't believe that we were being completely forthcoming. Again, we didn't vote for President Obama because we wanted to feel less racist. We voted for him because
1) He can string together two sentences without being YouTube fodder.
2) The alternative was totally unacceptable.
Now, there do appear to be some American Socialists (of whom I was previously unaware) who voted for Obama because they thought he would help promote their agenda. I certainly do not fall into that category, and I'm sure many other voters in my demographic feel the same way.
The only guy I would vote for on the right in 2012 is perhaps Mitt Romney, but things would have to go really far South for that to happen. The rest of them I don't care for. Palin obviously is dangerous, and she quit halfway through her term as governor of Alaska. Huckabee can play the bass, but he sometimes comes out of left field with odd statements, not to mention his religilousity. Ron Paul has some good ideas despite being totally cuckoo, and Giuliani is stuck in permament "Nine Eleven" mode. Who did I leave out? Haley Barbour, Bobby Jindal, Tim Pawlenty. Yeah, good luck with that.
